Product Innovation & Stewardship

At Ecovyst, we are developing and delivering products that are better for you and better for the planet.

Through our innovative collaborations, we are delivering: customer solutions that propel growth; and products that are safe for their intended use throughout the life of each product. Currently >80% of our innovation pipeline is focused on customer sustainability solutions. Our process ensures that we:

  • Minimize potential impacts to health, safety, and the environment;
  • Provide relevant information and assistance regarding proper use of our products to our commercial partners and other relevant stakeholders; and
  • · Manufacture and sell products in compliance with laws and regulations that govern them.

Safe Products for Everyday Use

Our core products are used in a wide range of industrial applications. When used as intended, these materials are generally classified as safe, low-risk chemicals that are not included on regulatory Chemicals of Concern Lists. Based on their chemical and physical properties and combined with their toxicological and ecotoxicological profiles, our products are not considered a significant risk to the environment or to consumers when used for their intended use. Across our total products:

  • Zero (0) % are Cat1 Carcinogens (Cat1 carcinogens are known or presumed to be carcinogenic to humans);
  • Our products do not contain endocrine disruptors;
  • Our products are not Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs);
  • Our products are not Persistent, Bioaccumulative, and/or Toxic (PBT) Chemicals; and
  • All of our products are classified according to the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS).

Our Global Product Strategy - An Innovation Pipeline with a Global R&D Footprint

Our expertise in advanced materials such as silicas and zeolites, along with catalyst technologies, drives a robust product development pipeline that is expected to produce growth and improve our competitive value proposition. We provide a diverse range of industry solutions through our global R&D locations, where we employ a stage gate innovation process with extensive laboratory and pilot-scale capabilities to refine process economics and benefit our customers, as well as technical support for large-scale commercialization.

As a member of the American Chemistry Council (ACC) in the USA, we are committed to the Global Product Strategy (GPS), which is designed to improve product stewardship actions and increase public awareness and confidence that chemicals in commerce are safely managed throughout their lifecycle.

Our product stewardship program includes completing risk reviews for new products and characterizations for the materials we manufacture, prioritizing chemical risks, recommending risk management actions where needed, and making chemical health and safety information available to the public. Risk ranking encompasses inherent risks (toxicity, corrosivity, flammability, etc.) and product end use.

Lifecycle Approach Considerations

We rank products based upon risk from highest to lowest. Products with the highest potential ranking have publicly available product stewardship summaries that outline the hazards, exposures, risks, and recommended risk management actions that should be taken.

Our Director of Product Stewardship evaluates new products across their full life cycle. The methodology assesses HSE impacts from cradle to cradle for all new products. Our Product Stewardship expert also proactively works with Ecovyst’s Research and Development organization to redesign products containing substances of potential concern, where technically feasible. As an organization, we look for solutions in bringing products to market for their intended use that are beneficial to people and the environment.

Advancing Sustainability Through Our Products

Municipal Water Treatment Solutions

As part of our alignment with the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), we contribute to enhancing water supplies around the world. Our zeolites help make municipal water safer by aiding in the removal of lead from potable drinking water and reducing the release of lead from lead-based pipelines.

We are driven to produce products that protect our water supplies for generations to come. In the end, it is not just about what is good for today, but also about what is good for the future of our communities and the environment.

Lower Emissions, Cleaner Air

Our products are used in many diverse applications that contribute to cleaner air and safer roadways. As you get in your car every day, you will find that our products help to reduce vehicle emissions.

We make products that improve engine performance. This includes catalysts that lower tailpipe emissions for diesel engines and aid in the production of renewable fuels, specifically sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) and renewable diesel fuels. Together, this adds up to a more environmentally sound future for transportation.

We are REACH® Compliant to Ensure a Better Future

Our products are compliant with the regulatory requirements in the countries where they are sold. We have registered all products manufactured and sold in the European Union under the REACH® program. Additionally, all materials sold in the United States are on the Active TSCA inventory.

Ecovyst is committed to complying with the requirements of the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization, and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH®) regulation. REACH® is a European Union (EU) regulation that aims to improve the protection of human health and the environment from the risks posed by chemicals.

REACH® stands for Registration, Evaluation, Authorization, and Chemical Restriction:

  • Registration: As a company that manufactures and sells chemicals in the EU (and beyond), Ecovyst registers all relevant substances with the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA). We then work together with other companies who have registered the same substance. Ecovyst collects and submits data to ECHA on the hazardous properties of all substances we manufacture in or import into, the EU in quantities above 1 tonne per year.
  • Evaluation: ECHA evaluates registered chemicals for compliance and potential hazards and risks. This provides a means for authorities to ask for further information.
  • Authorization: If authorized, REACH allows restricted substances of very high concern (SVHCs) to continue being used. This ensures that any risk the substance poses is adequately addressed, justified, and controlled. Ecovyst does not manufacture SVHCs in or import SVHCs into, the EU.
  • Chemical Restriction: If the risks are deemed unmanageable, chemicals are restricted or banned. Chemical restrictions have not been imposed upon Ecovyst’s raw materials or products.

Ecovyst is required to evaluate the risks posed by our substances and to reduce those risks as warranted.

REACH® also encourages competition and innovation throughout the EU chemicals industry by encouraging companies to collaborate and transparently share data when registering substances. REACH® applies to all chemicals imported into or produced in, the EU. By gathering and evaluating chemical information, REACH® reduces the potential risks and hazards of all chemical substances. Ecovyst proudly complies with strict REACH® standards by testing all chemical substances and supplying relevant safety data to our customers. We proudly align ourselves with REACH’s goal of creating safer workspaces and protecting the environment.
